Budget Accommodation in Portimao: Jardins do Amparo

Budget accommodation in Portimão (Portugal) doesn’t mean you must be a backpacker looking for a cheap hostel. Jardins do Amparo is a great option for two or four people traveling together around the Algarve. As a two bedroom apartment with up-to-date appliances, IKEA style furniture, and modern decor, Jardins do Amparo makes you feel at home. Come and go as you please, and save money by cooking at your own apartment in Portimao.

We stayed for three nights and had an easy going time. I consider the general neighborhood safe, surrounded by many other new and old mid-rise apartment buildings and family homes. Walking the streets around the area at night time (in winter the sun sets around 5:30pm), was not an issue. The only problem we had were the prolonged stairs from the locals who dressed in winter parkas and tuques. All we wore in the nighttime air was a t-shirt and jeans. Coming from Canada, temperatures of 60ºF at dusk is considered quite mild.

Getting to Portimão

Portimão is located west of the main city of Faro, about 1 hour and 30 minutes by train. It is easily accessible by both car and train. Check out our post on how to get from Faro to Portimão by train for more information. Further west of the city is the quaint town of Lagos, and day trip is definitely worth your time.

Room Overview

The apartment has almost everything you might need for a comfortable stay. The fully equipped kitchen includes a nice sized refrigerator, an oven with 4 burners, microwave, kettle, and an electric grill for cooking your fish!

The living room is well furnished as are the two bedrooms. Beds are on the soft side – just the way we like them. Both Meredith and I have had a great sleep the entire time at Jardins do Amparo.

There is even an outdoor balcony area which houses a washing machine should you need to do some laundry while staying in Portimão.

Negative: The noise factor is one of the only real complaints we have about this apartment. Sometimes, when the man next door was sneezing or laughing too loud, it sounded like he was in our living room with us! The walls are quite thin. The noise from outside was fine, we barely heard anything from our ground level apartment.

Location in Portimao

The apartment is a little tricky to find if you don’t know the area. Lucky for us, we had been staying at the Studio 17 Apartments, which are a stones throw away, just across the street! It was an easy move over to Jardins, even though we noticed there is no sign on Jardins exterior like there is at Studio 17.

Jardins do Amparo map location

Jardins do Amparo is centrally located in Portimao, about a 20 minute walk from the train station (north) and a similar time to walk to the main tourist beach at Praia da Rocha south of the apartment.

A supermarket called Continente is located a short distance from Jardins at one of the smaller local malls. Across the street from that, you can also find Lidl and Aldi for additional grocery shopping options. We preferred the Continente for its big selection of fish, cheese, meats, and wine!

Wifi Overview

The free internet was quite fast, as you can see from the speed test below. I use a VPN proxy for connecting to the internet, and I was still getting download speeds of 36 Mbps. More than enough to watch a movie on Netflix.

We booked during low season (early December) when rates are generally much more affordable. I imagine at the height of tourist season, this apartment would be priced slightly higher.

Total for 3 Nights: $42 USD

How to book Jardins Do Amparo

Booking Jardins do Amparo is fairly straight forward. One Tip: the staff do not seem to speak English! This wasn’t a big problem because we communicated by email before arriving at the apartment. We made sure to specify our exact arrival time, sure enough Fatima (our host) waived to us from the apartment balcony and beckoned us inside. She pointed out everything we would need and went through the entire apartment – in Portuguese of course!
